Deaconess is hosting a community Farmers Market each Wednesday through mid-October, weather permitting, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the Deaconess Hospital campus off Edgar Street, behind the Deaconess Physicians Center building. The first Farmers Market of the season is Wednesday, May 26. There will also be a Farmers Market on Thursdays at the Gateway campus. The Deaconess Farmers Market provides employees and Deaconess Hospital neighbors the opportunity to purchase a variety of healthy, seasonal produce without the hassle of having to go very far to shop. Hartke Pool will be open daily from May 29th through August 10th; hours are 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Anthony Oates and Garvin Pools will be open June 5th through August 1st; hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday - Sunday.
The liners are being replaced at Lorraine and Helfrich Pools which will delay their opening until the end of June; the exact date will depend on how quickly the work at Lorraine and Helfrich can be completed. Hours for Lorraine and Helfrich Pools will be 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday – Sunday. Until those pools open, the Lorraine Swim Team will practice at Anthony Oates Pool and the Helfrich Swim Team will practice at Garvin Pool.
The new pools, Red Mosby and Rochelle-Landers, will be open from June 5th through August 1st; 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday and noon to 8:00 pm on Sunday. There is a Family Night at Red Mosby Pool on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and at Rochelle-Landers on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Admission for Family Night is $5.00 for two adults and four children.
Admission to the neighborhood pools is only $2.00 for those ages 13 and older, $1.00 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for children ages 3 and under. Hartke is $4.00 per person and includes unlimited use of the water slide; children ages 3 and under get in free.

| | ST. MARY’S TEACHING SAFE SITTER CLASSES (Educational)

St. Mary’s will conduct SAFE SITTER classes during the months of June and July of 2010. SAFE SITTER is a medically accurate, hands-on class that teaches boys and girls ages 11 to 13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children.
SAFE SITTERS will learn:
What to do if a child chokes.
Safety for the sitter.
How to call 911 for help.
Babysitting business skills (how to refuse a babysitting job, how to negotiate a salary, how to recognize your limitations, etc.)
Basic childcare techniques (diapering, feeding, etc.)
How to entertain children and keep them safe.
Young children cannot always communicate their needs or protect themselves. The
babysitter must be able to handle whatever situation arises.
SAFE SITTER classes for 2010 will be offered on the following dates:

Thursday, June 17th
Tuesday, July 27th
Thursday, July 29th
Please note that sitters do NOT have to attend all of the sessions. These are one-day classes being offered on four different dates.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and parents/guardians are encouraged to attend a 15-minute ceremony honoring the students at 3:15 p.m. Participants need to bring a sack lunch.
Each class costs $55 and includes a student manual, a messenger bag, a list for important phone numbers, a flashlight, band aids and other supplies. $15 scholarships are also available based on financial need.
All SAFE SITTER classes will be held at St. Mary’s Hospital. Registered participants will receive a personalized letter with detailed information about the specific location of their class. What: The Race for Prevention series includes three classes covering eight simple steps to cancer and disease prevention and highlighting statistics, dietary recommendations, foods and additives to avoid, and more.

| | MAGIC & MYSTERY: THE ART OF ROB EVANS (Arts and Entertainment)

Rob Evans has been selected as the Evansville Museum’s 2010 Martha and Merritt deJong Memorial Artist-in-Residence. In conjunction with his residency and weeklong classes, 35 of Evans’ paintings will be featured in the Main Gallery exhibition, MAGIC & MYSTERY: THE ART OF ROB EVANS, from June 27 – August 29.
Artist and independent curator Rob Evans lives and works in Wrightsville, Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University in 1981 and has been awarded grants from the Ford Foundation, Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation. Evans’ meticulous paintings and drawings have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions including the Evansville Museum’s 2007-2009 nationally traveling exhibition, Object Project.
Most recently, Evans’ 10 foot painting, Cicada, traveled to five museums in the state of Pennsylvania as part of the exhibition, Artists of the Commonwealth: Realism in Pennsylvania Painting 1950-2000. His work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Museum of Art and the San Francisco Art Museums, among others.
Evans offers this insight into his work, “Having been raised by scientist parents, I have always had a fascination with the sciences. For the last 20 years, my paintings have been based primarily on direct observations of the forces of nature at work: the passages of time; the cycles of life and death; growth and decay; changes of season and weather; the mysteries of life.” |

At Camp Imagination 2010, campers are invited to explore their creativity with the Musictellers of Tales & Scales and become Musictellers themselves! Campers will develop their own unique Musictales while participating in imagination-packed games and activities incorporating storytelling, music, theater, and creative movement. Campers will share their week-long experiences by performing for family and friends on the last day of the session. No prior experience with the performing arts is necessary!

| | AMPHITHEATRE OFFERS COMMUNITY DISCOUNTS (Arts and Entertainment)

Lincoln Amphitheatre is hosting a discounted week for Vanderburgh County residents.
From July 20-25, the general admission ticket price for Vanderburgh County residents’ includes the performance of LINCOLN and the musical tribute A Concert in the Park for $19.95 per person and an additional $8 for the optional meal.
LINCOLN is performed at Lincoln Amphitheatre and runs nightly with the exception of Mondays until August 7. The non-profit Lincoln Amphitheatre is supported in part by individual and corporate donations. The “Lincoln’s Legacy Lives” fundraising campaign is underway to help fund the second season’s production of LINCOLN, a two-act play with music by playwright Ken Jones.

| | ST. MARY'S AND ECHO TEAMING UP FOR 2010 DEVELOPMENTAL SERIES (Educational)
St. Mary's Center for Children and ECHO Community Health Care are teaming up to present the 2010 Developmental Series. The classes will take place the fourth Thursday of each month from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. and will be held in the Conference Room at St. Mary's Center for Children.
Dr. Jim Schroeder, Pediatric Psychologist at St. Mary's Center for Children, and his wife Amy will discuss the following topics:
Normal signs/challenges of child development
Early indications of problems
Programs and agencies that can help
Your questions on the challenges of raising young children
The 2010 Developmental Series is geared towards parents and caregivers of children ages 0–3 years old. Child care will be provided on-site. The program is free. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
The theme for the session on Thursday, July 22nd is "Social development: What should I expect in the first three years?”
The 2010 Developmental Series began this past February. Remaining classes and topics include:
Thursday, August 26th – “Cognitive skills in young children.”
Thursday, September 23rd – “Providing stability for young children.”
Thursday, October 21st – “The emergence of motor skills.” (Third Thursday of the month) |
