ARCHABBEY LIBRARY EXHIBIT FEATURES ARTWORK OF MICHAEL MORAN      (Arts and Entertainment)
Ongoing Event, Ends 9/26/2010

The Saint Meinrad Archabbey Library Gallery, St. Meinrad, IN, is presenting an exhibit of artwork by artist Michael Moran, CP, of Bronx, NY. Exhibit dates are August 10 to September 26.
Br. Michael professed his vows in 1974 as a brother of the Eastern Province of the Passionist Community. In 1977, he received a master’s degree in theology from St. John’s University in New York City in comparative religions. Though largely self-taught, he studied art with August Mosca, a noted Long Island artist, from 1984 to 1989. He attended The Art Students League in Manhattan from 1989 to 1990.
One of his specialties is painting icons, translating this ancient art form of the Eastern Christian Churches into contemporary terms. His works have been exhibited since 1985 in galleries and museums, largely in Illinois, Kentucky, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas. His icons are in many churches and private collections in the United States.
In this exhibit, “Icons and Silverpoint Drawings: An Invitation to Mystery,” he paired icons, with their detailed and colorful depictions of Christ and the saints, with silverpoint drawings, mostly detailed renderings of plants and flowers.
He explains, “Both call for discipline on the part of the artist: The icons, with their stylized form and strict rules for painting, and the silverpoint drawings, with their refusal, due to the ground upon which they are drawn, to allow for correction. Both also demand of the artist time spent in really looking, to try to get to the essence of what is depicted, be it saint or plant study.”
For library hours call, (812) 357-6401 or (800) 987-7311, or visit the Archabbey Library’s website: www.saintmeinrad.edu/library/library_hours.aspx.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Those wishing to view the exhibit may want to arrive at least 30 minutes before closing time.

August 21-September 26

“Contemporary Glass,” an exhibition by some of the Midwest’s finest emerging glass artists, opening Saturday, August 21, at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, gives true testament to the processes of art-glass making. Mixing techniques of glass blowing, flame-working, cold-working and kiln forming, the work of four artists pushes the boundaries of what we have expected to see in American art glass for the last four centuries.

The exhibition of artwork by glass artists Jiyong Lee, Carmen Lozar, Amy Rueffert, and Matt Urban runs from Saturday, August 21, to Sunday, September 26, 2010. A reception for the artists will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 21, during the New Harmony Art and Antiques Stroll, and is free and open to the public. During the reception, the artists will be available to answer questions.

New Kentucky State Fair Competitions
for Young Musicians

Through the Kentucky State Fair’s new initiative to attract and involve more youth, the Young Adult Project (YAP), two new competitions have been launched this year: the Kentucky State Fair Songwriters Contest and the Kentucky State Fair Battle of the Bands competition. Both are designed to feature the talents of Kentucky and Southern Indiana young adults, ages 14-20.
Participants in the Kentucky State Fair Songwriters Contest submitted recordings and lyrics for original songs. Their entries were evaluated by a panel of three judges in July. Judge Turley Richards has recorded with nine record labels, including Warner Brothers and Atlantic Records. Three of his records have graced the Top 100 Billboard charts, and Richards has cumulatively sold nearly 1.5 million records. For the past 15 years, Turley Richards has been working as a vocal coach, custom record producer, and performer and has recently launched The Listening Room, an online songwriting critique service. He is working on the book project, Blind Sighted, the story of his life and career as a blind musician and songwriter.
Judge Joni Wilcoxson is a singer-songwriter who composed her first song at age 11. In 2003, she was a prizewinner in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition. Wilcoxson released her second CD, Very Scary Fairy Tale, in 2007 and is currently writing songs for her third album. Judge Eric Harper is co-founder of the Louisville SongWriters Network. A former member of the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International, he has been writing for nearly 20 years.
The judges evaluated the musicality, originality, dynamics, composition, melody, and lyrics of each song, selecting Spencer Hodge, age 20, of New Albany, Indiana, as the winner of the Kentucky State Fair Songwriters Contest. Hodge’s entry, Hero, was praised for its sophisticated and unpredictable arrangement, emotional storyline, and well-crafted lyrics. Hodge has been writing songs for nearly half of his short life. As contest winner, he has earned time in the recording studios of Mom’s Music and will be showcased in performance at the Kentucky State Fair on Saturday, August 28, 2010.
Spencer Hodge along with the band, Heroes Get Remembered, will perform the winning song, “Hero,” in the YAP Tent sponsored by Ticketmaster, West Courtyard, right before the kick-off of the Kentucky State Fair Battle of the Bands, at 6:00p.m. on August 28. Following this opening act, seventeen youth bands will compete in the first annual Battle of the Bands. Photos and profiles of all seventeen bands are posted on the State Fair Web site: http://www.kystatefair.org/specialAreas/yap.aspx
This evening of youth music will be broadcast live on the KSF Young Adult Project’s iHigh.com Web site, and video of the performances will be archived on the iHigh site.
The Fair Board hopes to expand both of these new youth music competitions for the 2011 Kentucky State Fair. Mark Maxwell, owner of Mom’s Music, founder of the youth education program RockSchool, and consultant on these youth music initiatives, is pleased to see the Kentucky State Fair “create new opportunities for young local artists to be featured” at the Fair.
Guidelines for the 2011 Songwriters Contest and Battle of the Bands will be posted on the State Fair Web site in late fall.
For more information and continued updates on the 2010 Kentucky State Fair, visit the official Web site at www.kystatefair.org.
