Today the weekly newspaper known as the Mt. Vernon Democrat rolled off the presses for the last time.
The newspaper has published for 153 years.
It is a victim of revenue losses occasioned by the lock-down mandated by the Corona Virus.
Landmark Publications, which owns the newspaper, says the revenue losses from advertisers who closed their businesses during the lock-down were not recoverable and ordered the paper closed.
Editor Paul Wilcoxen says the paper’s business was building when the virus hit.
He has been at the helm of the paper for less than one year, and says he and his family plan to stay in Posey County to pursue other opportunities.
