An amazing young woman
During the Radiothon for Riley Hospital in August, I learned about Clare Scheller. Clare graduated from Mater Dei in May and in August was diagnosed with leukemia. She started chemo, but then had a very serious bout of septic shock and ended up losing her leg from the knee down.
She was in pretty bad shape during our Radiothon and I just found her story very compelling and it has affected me to this day. I follow her updates on Caring Bridge, which is the website for people facing cancer or other serious illnesses.
I am happy to report that Clare is doing much better! She's been fitted with her prosthetic leg and has even stood on it! She will also be leaving Riley very soon to get treatment at another therapy-based hospital in Indy. She still has a long and difficult fight ahead of her, so if you can keep Clare and the rest of her family in your prayers, that would be great!
And, this is really cool! Mark your calendar for Thursday, November 11th. Salad World on the Westside is doing a fundraiser for Clare and her friend Kyle Weis (who was tragically killed in an auto accident over the summer). The fundraiser starts at 11 a.m. and it's your chance to eat some great food from Salad World, but also raise money in memory of Kyle and also to support Riley Hospital in honor of Clare.
This is one of the many reasons I love Evansville and am proud to call the Tri-State my home! And Clare......keep fighting like a girl!! :o)
