Attack of the movie sequels!

A lot of people complain about the number of sequels that hog all the screens at movie theatres these days.  And if you're one of them, then I hate to tell's going to be a bad year for you.  That's because there are 27 sequels flooding the marketplace.  And that's an all-time record. (The previous record was 23 in 2003.)  It also represents about one-fifth of all wide releases for the coming year!

Broken down even further, there are five "Part Fours" coming out this year...the fourth installments in the "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Scream", "Mission: impossible", "Twilight" (yeah!), and "Spy Kids" franchises. That my friends, is a record.

And there will be five "Part Fives", which is another record!  Franchises getting a fifth installment are "The Fast and the Furious", "Final Destination", "X-Men", "Winnie the Pooh" and "Shrek". (Although for "Shrek" we're talking about the "Puss in Boots" stand-alone movie, so I think that qualifies as more of a spin-off than a sequel.)

Now these numbers are just staggering.....this year we'll also see the release of the seventh "Muppets" and "Planet of the Apes" flicks and the eighth "Harry Potter"!  Apparently, there's no record on third installments this year, although July will see the ridiculous third "Transformers." That's the one that completely re-writes the Summer of 1969 when we first landed on the moon.

Other sequels out this year include "Paranormal Activity 3", "The Hangover Part 2", and "Sherlock Holmes 2".....not to mention "Cars 2", "Kung Fu Panda 2", "Happy Feet 2", and the sequels to "Hoodwinked" (don't even remember the first one), and "Alvin and the Chipmunks".

So far.......Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone are resisting the urge to bring back John McClane and Rocky Balboa, respectively.  But, the season is early yet and I put nothing past those two!

Indeed, it looks like it could be a long summer at the box office.
